In July 2006, Mapesho’s mother died as she was giving birth to him. Mapesho was admitted into the children’s ward at Mukinge Hospital and remained there for 3 months until he was healthy enough to leave. Mapesho’s father, Felix, was overwhelmed with the prospect of a newborn baby because he had no means with which to take care of Mapesho. Pam approached Felix and offered to provide support in the means of clothing, food, and other supplements. Felix brings Mapesho to Pam once a month to obtain more supplements. Mapesho has recently turned two and is doing very well. Because Felix must care for Mapesho, it is difficult for him to find time to work in the field, subsequently making it difficult to provide for the rest of his children. Felix hopes that Mapesho can enter Mulunda Miaka Orphanage when it opens, allowing him to better provide for the rest of his family, and giving Mapesho the hope of a better future. Felix hopes that at Mulunda Miaka Orphanage Mapesho will be able to gain a good education, and then Mapesho can return to his family, able to support and empower them.
