A snippet from the July 2011 Newsletter: To sign up, simply email mmorphanage@gmail.com.

“If you recall from the last newsletter, Pam’s brother Dee had to return home to care for his daughter who had been born prematurely. We are thankful for your prayers; she has been consistiantly gaining weight and is quite healthy, defying expectiations. Dee has now returned to MMO to finish details on the Founder’s House and work on infrasturcure, such as installing the water tanks that will provide water pressure for the entire orphanage. At this point only the Founder’s House will be complete, but once this is done, Pam, Menda and their family will be able to move to the site. This will allow them to start accepting more orphaned children: the government is already holding two young children for MMO that have no family to care for them. Once they move to the site, they can also expand sustainability projects and continue to work on the remaining buildings.

Speaking of sustainablity projects, MMO’s eggs are continuing to sell out. We have placed an order for 400 more chickens to meet the demand, with all profits going to support development at MMO. Pam also has tomatoes and cabbage growing, with plans to expand this once they move to MMO. As Pam, Menda and their family settle at MMO, more sustainability projects will be able to start, such as honey and small livestock, and the current projects will be expanded. This will not only provide food for those living at MMO, but will create jobs for local residents and, when children are old enough, will be a source of job training for them.

More updates and pictures to come next month. Please keep Pam in your prayers as she works hard to care for her family and set the final peices in place to move to MMO, as her husband Menda is still away at medical school and can only visit for brief times. Also, while sustainabilty projects will one day provide for a majority of daily costs, construction and material costs continue to be high, and your financial support is needed as we continue to develop and construct Mulunda Miaka Orphanage.”

Exciting things are happening in 2011. Construction at MMO is going very well, and a government envoy visited and was very impressed by the progress being made. Pam was even interviewed by ZNBC, the national news station! The Founder’s Home is nearly complete, with wiring to be installed soon. Solar panels have been installed on the roof of the dining hall, and two chicken houses have been constructed, capable of holding 500 chickens each. Pam, Menda, and their family plan to move into their new home in March, and have already taken in Lushinjilo, the first orphaned child to be accepted at MMO. See below for recent pictures.

Though Mulunda Miaka Orphanage has yet to officially open, the first orphaned child has been accepted. After a long process consisting of much paperwork and time spent in government offices, Lushinjilo, was officially placed in the care of Mulunda Miaka Orphanage, just in time for his first birthday! Lushinjilo’s mother died in the hospital after giving birth, and no relatives came to claim him. After living in a hospital for nearly a year, now, for the first time, he is part of a real family. Pam and Menda’s two daughter’s have happily accepted their new baby brother, calling him “their baby”. For the time being, Lushinjilo will stay with Pam, Menda and their children in their current home until their home at the orphanage is completed.

We are excited to announce that over the course of her two month fundraising tour, Pam was able to raise over $45,000 (£28,000) for Mulunda Miaka Orphanage. Pam and her youngest son Simeon (who turned 1 during the trip) began the tour traveling with Lynn Hacker, treasurer for MMO. Traveling through the U.K and U.S., Pam and Lynn were able to see many old friends and make many new ones, sharing the story of MMO in a variety of settings. From living rooms to church sanctuaries, Pam told of her dream for Mulunda Miaka Orphanage and what would be needed to accomplish it.

Many supporters made generous financial contributions, which will allow Pam, Menda, and their family to move to the orphanage site in the coming months, finally able to accept orphaned children into Mulunda Miaka Orphanage. They will move into the Founder’s Home, the first of four buildings at the orphanage that will be completed. More money is still needed to finish the other buildings and officially open MMO, but thanks to your support, the dream is finally beginning. Within days of returning to Zambia, Pam began the process of adopting Lushinjilo, an 11 month old orphaned baby who has been at Mukinge Hospital his entire life. Once the paperwork is completed, Lushinjilo will be the first child to be accepted by Mulunda Miaka Orphanage. Thanks to all who were a part of Pam’s fundraising tour – your prayers and support are greatly appreciated.
